How to take care of your visual health

The function of the eye is to transform into electrical impulses the luminous rays coming from those objects found in the outside world, and lead them to the brain. Half of the information received from the environment reaches us through our eyes.

How does the eye work?

Light enters the eye and passes through the cornea. This transparent and external part of the eye is curved, so that the rays passing through it are diverted so that light passes through the pupil to the crystalline lens. The amount of light that enters is regulated by the iris and the ciliary muscles that cause the pupil, when exposed to excessive or insufficient light, to contract or dilate.

In short, the light as it enters hits the crystalline lens which causes it to refract and reach the retina. The light is converted into electrical energy by the retina and from there passes to the brain stem through the optic nerve to reach the occipital lobe and become image.

Diseases of the eye

There are numerous eye-related diseases, such as Meibomo Gland Dysfunction (DGM). DGM is one of the eye diseases that causes sties and dry eyes, among other problems. In order to treat this pathology, heat must be applied to the eyelid and then a palpebral massage must be performed.

The heat helps the blocked secretions in the eyelid glands fluidize. After applying heat, the massage helps fluidized secretions to release.

Among the most common diseases we find:

  • Cataracts : It is as if the crystalline has a cloud that is created when the proteins in this area are agglutinated.
  • Glaucoma : Intraocular pressure damages the optic nerve and this causes glaucoma.
  • Macular degeneration : Its main characteristic is the loss of central vision caused by damage to the macula.
  • Diabetic retinopathy : In this case the blood vessels grow abnormally and affect diabetics. It can cause retinal detachment and consequent blindness.

How to take care of your visual health?

One of the easiest steps to healthy eyes is to take care of your diet. There are a number of foods that contain minerals and vitamins that are beneficial to your visual health. Vitamin A, as well as foods containing antioxidants, vitamins C and E, lutein, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and zeaxanthin, are good for the eyes and their well-being.

Proper nutrition and hydration, as well as getting rid of alcohol and tobacco, help prevent and maintain visual health.

Eating tips for taking care of your eyesight

  • Eating green leaves: Foods such as spinach, broccoli, cabbage, chard, and watercress contain large amounts of zeaxanthin and lutein. These are carotenoid pigments located in the center of the retina. They allow us to enjoy high-definition vision thanks to the high density of photoreceptors. They have an antioxidant function and thus prevent free radicals from damaging eye tissues.
  • Foods with Omega 3: Fish is a great source of omega 3, especially salmon, tuna, sardines and trout. These fatty acids are good so that the central part of the retina (called the macula) does not become inflamed or degenerate. They also help to combat the dryness of the eyes that often occurs in women suffering from hormonal disorders.
  • Vitamin C: It is found mainly in citrus foods, as well as in guava, strawberries, peppers or broccoli. It is an antioxidant that helps reduce any damage to the macula caused by oxidation.
  • Vitamin E: We find it in almonds, sunflower seeds or wheat germ. It also acts as an antioxidant and protects cells from free radical damage.
  • Add zinc to your diet: Pumpkin seeds, oysters, peanuts, lentils and garlic are some of the foods rich in zinc. This nutrient is essential for the body to transport, absorb, and use vitamin A. Its deficiency can cause night blindness or that the eye is not able to adapt to the darkness.
  • Anthocyanins, selenium and flavonoids: These elements are related to eye problems. Selenium is an antioxidant found in oysters, fish, and nuts. Anthocyanins are found in foods such as strawberries, blackberries, cherries and raspberries. While flavanoids are found in chocolate.
