What would really happen if there were no moon?

If there were no moon, the climatic conditions on earth would be very hard and life as we know it today would not exist. It should be borne in mind that the moon controls the rotation of the earth. If there were no moon, the earth day would be just 8 hours and current weather stations would not exist.

To understand the reason for this statement, let’s see how the moon originated and what effects it has on Earth. Since it not only controls its movements, it also affects the tides and life in general.

Formation and influence of the Moon

According to the theories of the formation of the cosmos, the Earth formed about 4.6 billion years ago. The Moon formed about 100 million years later as a result of the impact of a celestial body on Earth. This impact caused a part of our planet to be detached (still in the form of an incandescent sphere) which was placed in orbit with the Earth.

When placed in orbit with the Earth, the Moon began to exert a gravitational attraction. This attraction was the cause of decreasing the speed of rotation of the earth. In the beginning the Earth day was only 6 hours, and with the slowdown in rotation it went to the current 24 hours.

In addition to regulating the rotation of the earth’s speed, the Moon has an effect on the tides. Due to the gravitational attraction, the Moon attracts the water of the oceans towards it, causing the tides to occur. Hence, several times a day high tide and low tide occur.

Effects of the disappearance of the Moon

Among the most visible effects if the Moon ceased to exist we would have:

The stagnation of the seas

If the tides did not occur, the sea currents would drop in intensity, which would cause a stagnation of the ocean waters . For both oxygenation and natural cleansing of the seas would be diminished and many of the existing species disappear.

Strong winds

It could be the case that the axis of rotation of the Earth was aligned with the Sun. This would cause half of the plant to be completely dim, while the other half would be continuously exposed to the sun. This situation would cause the temperatures in both halves to be completely different, causing winds of more than 300 kilometers per hour due to these drastic differences in heat.

Severe climatic changes

When the Earth’s axis loses its stability, the climatic seasons we know would disappear. Summers would be much hotter and winters colder. Reaching the temperature to rise or fall more than 50 degrees than we have today. So we could find summers around 100º and winters with temperatures of 80 degrees below zero.

Mass extinction of species

Life on earth would be much more complicated, especially as we get closer to the Poles. In fact, the only strip with acceptable living conditions would be the areas near the equator. This would make all species of animals unable to adapt to the new situation, would eventually disappear. And this extinction would be much greater in plants, since they cannot change their habitat.
